Dexter Studios has once again contributed to bringing a superhero universe to life with its realistic depiction of superpowers.
Dexter Studios(206560, hereinafter “Dexter”), a comprehensive content production company, announced that it provided technical support for the VFX (visual effects) and DI (digital color grading) departments of the Netflix series “The WONDERfools”. This project also showcased Dexter’s ICVFX capabilities, previously demonstrated in Amazon MGM Studios’ global project “Butterfly” and the films “The Moon” and “Project Y.”
“The WONDERfools” is a superhero comedy adventure set in 1999, at the turn of the century, in which ordinary people who accidentally acquire superpowers struggle to protect the world from villains threatening peace. Starring actors Park Eun-bin, Cha Eun-woo, Choi Dae-hoon, Im Sung-jae, Kim Hae-sook, and Son Hyun-ju, the series has garnered anticipation as a Korean-style superhero drama with a late-20th-century vibe. It has particularly drawn attention as a reunion project between Park Eun-bin—who won widespread acclaim for ENA’s “Extraordinary Attorney Woo”—and director Yu In-sik.
Dexter joined forces to bring to life the unique hero universe of “The WONDERfools”. Dexter has previously brought to life numerous distinct worlds where superpowers exist through projects such as the film “Knights of the Zodiac”, Netflix’s “Yu Yu Hakusho”, “Parasite: The Gray”, “Cashero”, and Disney+’s “Moving”.
Jay Seung Jaegal, Head of the VFX Division at Dexter, who participated as VFX Supervisor, stated, “‘The WONDERfools’ is like a ‘VFX encyclopedia,’ combining massive scale, spectacular VFX direction, and creative depictions of superpowers,” adding, “To portray the superpowers exhibited by ordinary people in everyday spaces with a realistic texture, we recreated actual objects and physical phenomena through VFX and created realistic action scenes by stripping away cartoonish fantasy and exaggeration,” he added.
Kim Il-kwang, a colorist at Dexter’s DI Division who handled the digital color grading, said, “While capturing the end-of-the-century vibe of 1999 through color, we put a lot of effort into bringing out a vibrant palette that highlights the sophisticated direction and wit unique to ‘The WONDERfools’.” “Viewers will experience a unique visual aesthetic that breaks away from the dark and heavy atmosphere typical of superhero films, where the protagonists’ cheerful and warm personalities coexist with the tension created by menacing villains.”
Meanwhile, Dexter is strengthening its unrivaled capabilities across various fields—including theaters, OTT platforms, films, dramas, and animation—by collaborating with domestic and international production companies on all aspects of post-production, such as VFX (visual effects), DI (digital color grading), sound design and mixing, and virtual production.
