Dexter Studios (206560, hereinafter Dexter), a comprehensive content specialist company, has unveiled a collaborative performance video between its subsidiary Flashback Ground’s immersive media art exhibition ‘Flashback : Gyerim’ and top-tier street dancer Rihey.
This collaboration represents an attempt to reinterpret a narrative previously confined to static records through the lens of a new generation’s contemporary performance. It draws attention with Rihey’s intense performance staged within the exhibition Flashback : Gyerim, which recreates a Silla folktale as an immersive experience. The project demonstrates the impact of reinterpreting traditional culture, with its teaser video alone surpassing 1.6 million views.
Rihey, who gained prominence as a member of dance crews ‘CocaNButter’ and ‘BUMSUP’ on Mnet ‘Street Woman Fighter’ and ‘World of Street Woman Fighter’, is recognized as one of Korea’s leading street dancer. To realize a performance where Silla’s unique aesthetics coexist with modern dynamism, Rihey personally created choreography blending hip-hop and krump genres.
The video, a surreal flashback scene from Silla folklore, combines Gyerim’s content, music blending traditional Korean musical elements with cyberpunk-style mechanical beats, and Rihey’s unique performance. It has been well-received for its sensory direction bridging past and future.
The performance is organically connected to the worldview of each content piece, including ‘Najeong’, ‘Geoseogan’, ‘Sindansu’, ‘The Dragon’s Path’, and ‘The Guardians’. Rihey’s performance, set against the large horse sculpture from ‘Geoseogan’ that embodies the narrative of Silla’s birth, expresses the dynamic energy of Silla embarking on its millennial journey and stands out as a highlight of the video.
