A delegation from the Japanese video content industry visited Dexter Studios, a leader in Korean VFX technology, to
learn about the company’s know-how in post-production work, and explore the possibility of transferring technology to Japan.
Content specialist company Dexter Studios [206560] announced on May 28 that the Japan Post Production Association (JPPA) visited its company headquarters and subsidiary Livetone. Director Jegal Seung, Director Jin Jong-hyun, the company’s VFX supervisors as well as Livetone CEO and Sound Supervisor Choi Tae-young each shared their knowledge of video and sound technology to the JPPA delegation.
Established in 1993, JPPA aims to develop the post-production market and promote the content industry in Japan. It has about 154 companies engaged in various video content industries, including TV programs, movies, and advertisements, as members.
A JPPA official said, “When ‘Parasite’ was released in Japan in 2020, it made headlines as it became the largest box office success among Korean films officially released in Japan ever. Then, the word went around that Dexter Studios and its subsidiary Livetone had worked on most of the film’s post-production, including the VFX, DI, and sound. So, we naturally had our eyes on Dexter Studios’ progress as it continued to amass an impressive portfolio of movies and TV series.”
The official also explained the situation in Japan, saying, “Recently, TV series produced in collaboration with Korean companies or filmed locally have earned rave reviews from Japanese viewers. As such, we wanted to see the advanced technology of a company like Dexter Studios that has outstanding post-production skills, and then see if we can apply similar technologies to Japanese productions in the future. We want to benchmark K-content, which has the eyes and ears of the global market at the moment, and find ways to generate synergy between our two countries.”
A Dexter Studios official also said, “We have built a solid pipeline and system to handle global projects with as few setbacks as possible, and in recent years, we have received several inquiries from overseas about our technology and potential collaborative arrangements.” He added, “We hope our work with JPPA creates a platform where content industry experts from both countries can continue to exchange and work together on a global production one day. To that end, our company will continue to engage the public with appealing productions powerful enough to capture people’s eyes and ears.”
