On December 22, Part 1 of “Gyeongseong Creature” premiered on Netflix. The series rose close to the top of Netflix’s global viewership ranking in just three days, once again, proving the power of K-content. Meanwhile, “Gyeongseong Creature” also showcases the technological prowess of Dexter Studios, which worked on the series’ VFX design.
On December 26, Dexter Studios (206560), a company specializing in VFX and content production, revealed its VFX work that went into the new Netflix series “Gyeongseong Creature.” The series – released via Netflix – is produced by Story & Pictures Media, and Kakao Entertainment, and is co-produced by Studio Dragon.
“Gyeongseong Creature” is the story of two young people who had eyes only on their survival, taking an unexpected turn and starting to fight monsters born of greed when the hour grew darkest in the spring of 1945. Director Chung Dong-yoon, known for the K-drama series “Hot Stove League,” took up the microphone, whereas actors Park Seo-joon and Han So-hee each played the role of Jang Tae-sang, the best confidential informant in Gyeongseong, and Yoon Chae-ok, who tracks down missing people, even ones who are dead.
Jin Jong-hyun, Director of Dexter Studios, served as the overall VFX supervisor for the series. He said, “The thing about ‘Gyeongseong Creature’ was to create scenes that looked natural as we combined the chaos going on in Gyeongseong at the time and these mysterious disappearances. We talked with director Chung Dong-yoon and read up on some renowned books as well as other historical materials from back then to design VFX assets that looked authentic and interesting for the audience.”
Director Jin explained, “In one scene where the two main protagonists are having a conversation, I worked on the background of Gyeongseong to create an ambiance that looked neither too flashy nor too shabby so that the relationship between the characters stood out more naturally. For the Creature, we focused on matching its design with the overall look and feel of the series rather than producing something that just looked nice. We made sure its expressions and gestures felt different and unique compared to the others on screen.” He then said, “Our staff put in a lot of effort to perfect the VFX that went into the series, which is why I hope it gets a lot of love from viewers all over the world.”
Meanwhile, Dexter Studios has been on a roll with Netflix over the past several months, including working on DI (digital intermediate) for “Mask Girl,” which was a hit last summer, and the VFX technology for “Jung-E,” which was released earlier this year. In particular, for “Zombieverse,” Dexter Studios took charge of the VFX design for an entertainment show for the very first time since the company was established.
According to OTT ranking site Flix Patrol (as of December 25, 2023), “Gyeongseong Creature” ranked first in 14 countries, including Korea, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand. It ranked second globally in Netflix’s TV series category and is performing extremely well for Netflix subscribers around the world.
