Dexter Studios has reinforced its commitment to technological innovation aimed at enhancing both the efficiency and quality of VFX production by securing new AI-based VFX patents.
Content specialist company Dexter Studios (206560, hereafter “Dexter”) announced that it has completed the registration of four new patents related to AI-driven technologies such as AI de-aging and upscaling.
The newly registered AI patents include Video Sequence De-Aging Consistency Maintenance Technology and Multi-Layer Image High-Quality Upscaling Technology. These technologies combine advanced deep learning based video processing algorithms. They enhance both production efficiency and the overall quality of the final output.
The AI de-aging patent is titled “Video Production Method for Maintaining De-Aging Consistency in Video Sequences.” Unlike previous methods that applied de-aging effects individually to each frame, this technology automatically applies the effect across the entire video sequence. It achieves a natural and consistent appearance.
The method focuses on “keyframes” in the video. These are frames where facial expressions and lighting change significantly. The technology uses deep learning to intensively analyze these keyframes. It then applies the learned results to other frames with similar structures. This approach ensures a consistent de-aging effect throughout consecutive frames. Furthermore, the technology matches the color distribution of the face skin in the de-aged images. It excludes areas such as the neck, shoulders, and hair. This preserves the original atmosphere and skin tone. The result is a highly consistent and natural de-aging effect.
Using personalization features, the technology can recognize age and gender. This allows it to adjust the intensity of the de-aging effect. Both aging and de-aging are possible. Therefore, it can handle scenes where the character’s age changes dramatically. This technology is already being applied to projects such as global OTT platforms. It can also be used for “Face Swap” technology. This enables changing the filmed actor’s face to another actor’s face and expressions.
The patent titled “Video Production Method for High-Quality Upscaling of Multi-Layer Images” is an upscaling technology optimized for VFX and high-resolution content production. Unlike existing upscaling methods that work on single images, this method separates each layer of a multi-layer image, such as the EXR (Extended Range) format. Layers include color, lighting, depth, and position. Each layer is then upscaled independently before being reconstructed. This approach maintains the characteristic data of each layer. It allows multi-layer images to be upscaled to super resolution at the final production quality level. The result is improved texture and detail with high processing efficiency and no data loss.
In addition, Dexter has newly registered a total of four patents. These include 3D body profile production using full-body scanning and motion capture. They also cover a shooting system using digital humans in virtual production environments. Many new VFX technologies, including AI deep learning based matchmation technology and photogrammetry shooting automation technology, are also in the patent application process. Dexter operates a dedicated AI team composed of AI artists and AI engineers. The team focuses on accumulating AI production know-how. They are also developing new technologies such as generative AI.
Song Jae-won, director of Dexter’s R&D Center, said, “We are steadily increasing work efficiency through a number of AI technologies that directly link to the VFX production pipeline. We are expanding the application of these technologies to various projects, including movies, dramas, and commercials.” He added, “The resources secured by maximizing efficiency are being invested in securing unique technological advantages. This includes developing a deep learning based ‘digital human facial system’ that can be used for lead characters.”
