Dexter Studios captivated audiences at a global conference by sharing various details about its VFX pipeline and past projects. The company showcased its skills, considered on par with other renowned international studios, demonstrating its influence.
Content specialist company Dexter Studios [206560] announced on August 2 that it presented examples from its VFX pipeline featuring OpenUSD and its own virtual production studio, D1, at SIGGRAPH 2024. SIGGRAPH, held in Denver, Colorado, this year from June 28 to July 1, is the world’s largest and also the most prestigious conference in the computer graphics industry. This year’s event garnered significant attention with a conversation between NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
Dexter Studios was the only Korean VFX studio to collaborate with global software company Autodesk at this event, serving as a speaker for the Vision Series session. Autodesk explored how generative AI enhances creativity and the direction the industry should take with open and connected workflows, and it invited VFX studios from around the world to present some of their more notable projects. For Dexter Studios, VFX Director Jegal Seung and Production Management Director Jin Jong-hyun took their turn as presenters at the session.
Director Jegal Seung explained that applying Autodesk Maya and OpenUSD to Dexter Studios’ internal VFX pipeline helped reduce data volume and input time, all the while maximizing efficiency. Maya is animation and visual effects software released by Autodesk, and OpenUSD is a 3D technology language developed by Pixar and distributed as open source. He emphasized, “Behind the high-quality visual effects created by Dexter Studios is a systematic and advanced pipeline that plays a central role,” and added, “We believe that the process of improving workflows to respond to changes in the work environment and enhance efficiency could be a theme that benefits industry professionals the most.”
Director Jin Jong-hyun shared insights from Dexter Studios’ production work on “The Moon,” the first Korean film to use In-Camera Visual Effects (ICVFX) VP technology. He focused on analyzing the trial and error process and key points gleaned from first-hand experience, sharing the setup process and structural flow of Dexter Studios’ own virtual studio, D1. Director Jin added, “As the VFX supervisor for the film ‘The Moon,’ it’s refreshing to share about all of the sleepless nights and efforts that went into the production with my fellow artists worldwide. I hope this serves as a valuable point of reference for companies and stakeholders planning to operate or create virtual studios.”
Meanwhile, a number of internationally renowned VFX studios also participated in the session, including Rising Sun Pictures, known for their work on films such as “Thor: Love and Thunder,” and “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” Rodeo FX, responsible for the VFX in “Aquaman” and “Dune,” and Weta FX, the creators behind the “Lord of the Rings” and “Avatar” series. These companies presented some of their most notable works and experiences introducing machine learning technology to their processes.
