With “Project Silence,” directed by Taegon Kim, getting the thumbs up at the Cannes Film Festival, Dexter Studio, which participated in the project, appears to be basking in the limelight as both a VFX producer and investor in the film.
On May 24, Dexter Studios (206560), a company specializing in VFX and content production, said it not only worked on the VFX that went into “Project Silence,” but also supported the project as an investor. The film was released worldwide for the first time at a midnight screening at the Lumière Grand Theater in Cannes, France, at 0:30 a.m. on May 22 (7:30 a.m. on May 22 in Korea).
Previously, on December 14, 2021, Dexter Studios announced its involvement in the project by signing a VFX contract worth KRW 4.9 billion with production company Blaad Studios. The contract ran from October 14, 2020, to February 14, 2022.
A company official said, “We worked on the film’s VFX for about a year and a half since October 2020. That’s a long time to work on a project. The film recreates complex disaster situations such as climate change and vehicle action sequences that look like the real thing, and the plot is filled with suspense.” He added, “We used a number of special effects to add that extra kick into the film. We were in charge of not only the VFX, but also the digital color correction work to improve the overall quality of the visuals. And our subsidiary Livetone was responsible for the overall post-production in terms of the way the film felt sound-wise.”
“Project Silence” depicts the story of people stranded on the airport bridge struggling to survive due to a sudden streak of bad weather. It turned heads as the next highly anticipated film in theaters as it mixes in extreme tension unfolding amidst successive disasters, including some massive collisions, explosions, and collapses. More recently, even before the film’s domestic release date was confirmed, “Project Silence” made headlines when news of it being pre-sold in over 140 countries around the world hit the news outlets. The list includes France, the US, Germany, Spain, and Italy.
Kim Wook and Kang Jong-ik, co-CEOs of Dexter Studios, said, “We are very proud to be the VFX studio that worked on a project that has received so much attention and acclaim around the world. We will continue to promote K-VFX technology to audiences around the world with a variety of different content going forward.”
