Dexter Studios contributed to the realization of distinctive artistic quality by participating in multiple aspects of post-production for ‘Project Y’, one of the most anticipated films of the new year.
Dexter Studios (206560, hereinafter Dexter), a comprehensive content specialist company, announced its technical involvement in the film ‘Project Y’ across the VFX (Visual Effects), Digital Intermediate (DI), and ICVFX (In-Camera Visual Effects) departments.
‘Project Y’ tells the story of Miseon (played by Han So-hee) and Dogyung (played by Jeon Jong-seo), who dream of a different tomorrow while living in the heart of a dazzling city, and the events that unfold when they steal black money and gold bars at the precipice of their lives. Even before its release, it garnered attention at major film festivals, including official invitations to the ‘50th Toronto International Film Festival’ and the ‘30th Busan International Film Festival’, and winning the Best Film Award at the ‘10th London Asian Film Festival’.
Dexter’s VFX headquarters was responsible for the dramatic VFX direction that heightens the film’s tension. Beyond blockbusters, Dexter VFX Headquarters has recently maximized the realism of ‘Project Y’ with its realistic and intricate visual effects that capture even the smallest details. This expertise is evident in projects like the Academy Award-winning ‘Parasite,’ the films ‘No Other Choice’ and ‘Face,’ Netflix’s ‘Revelation,’ and Disney+‘s ‘Hyper Knife’ and ‘Tempest’.
VFX Supervisor Park Byung-joo, who participated in the project, stated, “This was a project where we focused on the essence of filmmaking—capturing the moment—by meticulously controlling the entire process from pre-production through filming and post-production to optimize the post-work.” He added, “To achieve high realism, we poured effort into every detail, from small elements enhancing the completeness of depiction to those filling the vast spaces of the climactic scenes.”
The uniquely vibrant and stylish color palette of ‘Project Y’ was achieved by Dexter DI Headquarters, known for its sophisticated DI work across genres and platforms, including last year’s films ‘Yadang: the snitch’ and ‘Omniscient Reader’, Netflix’s ‘Squid Game’ Season 3, ‘When Life Gives You Tangerines’, Disney+‘s ‘Nine Puzzles’, ‘The Murky Stream’, and dramas ‘Head Over Heels’ and ‘Typhoon Family’.
Shin Jeong-eun, the colorist from Dexter DI Headquarters who handled the digital color grading, stated, “‘Project Y’ is a work where, even within the rough and dark atmosphere of a crime genre film, the diverse colors and contrasts of light that reveal the complex facets of the characters stand out.” She added, “We meticulously adjusted the contrast and texture to break away from the genre’s typicality with gorgeous visuals while ensuring the characters’ emotional arcs and the narrative were emphasized.”
Dexter’s ICVFX expertise, previously showcased in Amazon MGM Studios’ global project ‘Butterfly,’ was also applied to ‘Project Y’. ICVFX is a Virtual Production (VP) technique that synchronizes real-time rendered backgrounds with camera movements, enabling simultaneous filming of virtual backgrounds rendered on LED displays and live actors’ performances. Using its proprietary vehicle system, Dexter captured footage of actual bustling city streets to create driving sources. Based on this, numerous high-fidelity vehicle driving scenes were produced, faithfully replicating the background, tone, and atmosphere of the main footage.
Meanwhile, Dexter collaborates with domestic and international production companies across the entire post-production spectrum, including VFX (visual effects), DI (digital intermediate), sound design and mixing, and virtual production. It continues to strengthen its unparalleled capabilities across diverse fields, including theaters and OTT platforms, films and dramas, and animation.
