Dexter Studios demonstrated its proven ability to realize immersive fantasy worlds by contributing to the production of the highly anticipated movie “Omniscient Reader: The Prophet,” set to hit theaters in the latter half of the year.
Content specialist company Dexter Studios (206560, hereinafter “Dexter”), along with its subsidiary, Livetone, handled the digital color grading (DI) and sound work for the movie.
Omniscient Reader: The Prophet tells the story of a world where, on the day a decade-long web novel reaches its finale, the fictional universe suddenly becomes reality. The story follows Kim Dok-ja (played by Ahn Hyo-seop), the novel’s sole reader, who teams up with the novel’s main character, Yoo Joong-hyuk (played by Lee Min-ho), and their allies as they fight to survive in this devastated world. Since its domestic release on July 23, the film has quickly risen to number one at the overall box office and has been pre-sold to 113 countries, including the United States, Japan, Canada, and Germany, drawing intense interest from audiences both at home and abroad.
Dexter’s DI Division, which has handled color grading for fantasy comic adaptations such as the “Along with the Gods” series, Disney+’s “Moving” and “Light Shop,” Netflix’s “Parasyte: The Gray,” and TVing’s “Death’s Game,” once again crafted the color palette and atmosphere of this imagined world. Meanwhile, Livetone collaborated for the second time with director Kim Byung-woo, following their work together on the film “Take Point.”
Park Jin-yeong, Executive Director and colorist at Dexter’s DI Division, responsible for digital color grading, said, “Omniscient Reader: The Prophet presents a unique world where the real and novel worlds overlap, requiring many creative ideas and visual techniques revolving around color. We focused on contrasting the dry, cold, low-saturation reality with the vivid, boldly colored novel world. Audiences will clearly notice the distinction in color tones between Kim Dok-ja, a character in the real world, and Yoo Joong-hyuk, the protagonist within the novel.”
Livetone’s CEO and sound supervisor Choi Tae-yeong said, “Since this work has no reference to compare to a similar universe, our core challenge was to create a sound design that would engage audiences familiar with web novels and webtoons.” He added, “Although the film depicts a game-like world with battles involving skills that don’t exist in reality, we focused on achieving an optimal balance within a cinematic environment by carefully implementing the protagonist’s (Kim Dok-ja’s) narration, background music that heightens emotion, sound effects, and ambient noise – all key elements of the story.”
Meanwhile, Dexter collaborates with production companies across the full spectrum of post-production, including visual effects (VFX), digital color grading (DI), digital imaging technician (DIT), and sound design and mixing, showcasing differentiated expertise across theaters, OTT platforms, films, dramas, and animation.
