Dexter Studios is accelerating its efforts to secure new growth engines by expanding into the B2C sector with the full-scale launch of its media art business.
Dexter Studios (206560, hereafter referred to as Dexter) announced the official launch of its media art brand “FLASHBACKGROUND” in partnership with the Cultural Heritage Technology Research Institute (TRIC), a company specializing in digital heritage content.
“FLASHBACKGROUND” is a compound word combining “Flashback,” a cinematic technique used for recalling past events, and “Background,” which refers to historical and cultural origins. The brand aims to reinterpret local legends and folktales as media art, creating immersive spaces where visitors can experience new worlds.
Dexter is targeting the rapidly emerging digital art market through its subsidiary, FLASHBACKGROUND Co., Ltd. Building on its proven capabilities in content planning and production, Dexter plans to expand beyond traditional VFX (Visual Effects), which focuses on visual appreciation, and evolve into a “VX (Visual eXperience) company” that delivers multisensory experiences.
Meanwhile, TRIC, Dexter’s partner, is a specialized company that preserves cultural heritage by converting it into digital twins and develops content across all fields based on this foundation. TRIC integrates cutting-edge technologies such as AI-based restoration, XR, and immersive media art to transform cultural heritage into multisensory experiential assets. The company has established its unrivaled expertise and technical prowess in the digital heritage sector through collaborations with major domestic and international institutions, including the National Heritage Administration, the National Museum of Korea, KBS, and UNESCO.

The starting point will be “FLASHBACKGROUND: Gyerim” (hereafter referred to as “Gyerim”), which is set to open this October in Gyeongju, a city renowned for its historical and cultural significance. Gyerim, Dexter’s first permanent exhibition hall, is an ultra-immersive media art space based on the history and legends of Silla, the ancient capital with a thousand-year legacy. Dexter is leveraging the full capabilities of the group, including VFX, immersive content, IP, sound effects, and spatial design, to create a high-sensitivity experiential environment centered on the theme of time and space travel.
Dexter is currently constructing a media art exhibition hall optimized for storytelling, with a total floor area of 5,600m2 (approximately 1,700 pyeong) and 14 exhibition rooms, in the prime location of the Bomun Tourist Complex, one of Gyeongju’s most renowned attractions. With the 2025 APEC Summit scheduled to take place in October and worldwide attention focused on Gyeongju, there are high expectations that Gyerim will also attract significant interest.
Co-CEO Kim Wook of Dexter stated, “We’re building a ‘Hip-Tradition’ media art exhibition hall where both domestic and international visitors of all ages can be fully immersed. Gyerim, which combines Gyeongju’s unique cultural heritage with Dexter’s differentiated content development and operational expertise, will become a landmark that meets not only cultural and artistic needs but also the demands of travel, tourism, and education.”
Co-CEO Kang Jong-ik added, “FLASHBACKGROUND is a media art brand that stands out for its ability to plan exhibitions reflecting the unique identity of any region with its own story, anywhere in the world. We are considering establishing a second FLASHBACKGROUND in Jeju, and we are also actively exploring opportunities to expand overseas, including East Asia.”
