Dexter Studios, which has proven its robust production capabilities with box office hits such as the “Along with the Gods” series, “Escape from Mogadishu,” and “Ashfall,” is entering the drama production business with the tvN series “Head Over Heels” marking its transformation into a comprehensive content company.
Dexter Pictures (CEO: Kim Dong-hyun), a professional content production subsidiary of Dexter Studios (206560), has confirmed that its first drama production, “Head Over Heels” will air on tvN in the second half of the year, thereby expanding its business scope to include drama production.
Based on the popular webtoon of the same name, “Head Over Heels” (Director: Kim Yong-wan, Writer: Yang Ji-hoon, Production: Studio Dragon, Dexter Pictures, EO Contents Group) is a coming-of-age romance drama that follows a high school girl who has never dated and works as a shaman, as she tries to save her first love, who is plagued by misfortune. The series draws attention with the casting of Cho Yi-hyun, who has showcased her acting skills through lovable and strong-willed characters in the “Hospital Playlist” series and “The Matchmakers,” and Choo Young Woo, who has emerged as a rising star with his performances in “The Tale of Lady Ok” and “The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call.”
Dexter Studios, renowned as one of Asia’s top studios, participates in the project’s visual effects (VFX) and digital intermediate (DI), delivering a level of visual quality that rivals leading global OTT productions. This drama series will be the first to fully utilize the Dexter Group’s all-in-one pipeline, which covers planning, production, and post-production.
Dexter Pictures was established as an independent content production company in 2022, after spinning off from Dexter Studios’ content division, to meet the growing global demand for K-content. The company has strengthened its creative autonomy and independence in content production. Dexter Pictures now plans and produces a wide range of content, including not only films but also dramas and short-form projects. Dexter Pictures plans to solidify its position as a comprehensive content production company by continuing to discover outstanding IP, starting with “Head Over Heels” which has already secured a slot with a major broadcaster. The company is currently developing a slate of projects based on more than 20 intellectual properties, including webtoons and web novels, and intends to unveil several of these works in succession.
The lineup features “Wizard Boy Mutterl,” director Lee Seok-hoon’s first OTT series, who has demonstrated his outstanding directorial skills with “The Pirates,” “The Himalayas,” and “Confidential Assignment 2: International”; “A Chance At Last,” which brings together director Lee Min-woo of “Not Others” and writer J. Sun of “Semantic Error,” and is based on a popular Naver webtoon of the same title; “Secret Garden,” a Joseon-era “Maze Runner” with an overwhelming scale powered by Hollywood virtual production technology; and “Dive Into You,” a romance fantasy co-produced as a Korea-Japan joint project with Amuse Entertainment.
Kim Dong-hyun, CEO of Dexter Pictures, stated, “Head Over Heels” is the first drama that expands Dexter Pictures’ planning and development capabilities into the drama genre, and it will serve as an important turning point as we transform into a comprehensive content production company. We plan to collaborate with a diverse range of creators in the future to deliver a wide spectrum of high-quality works across genres, including films, dramas, and short-form content.”
