Dexter Studios has reaffirmed its presence in the Chinese market by announcing its participation in the VFX for director Tsui Hark’s new martial arts film, “Legends of the Condor Heroes: The Gallants.”
Content specialist company Dexter Studios (206560, hereafter “Dexter”) revealed that it contributed VFX technology to “Legends of the Condor Heroes: The Gallants,” which is set for local release on January 29.
“Legends of the Condor Heroes: The Gallants” is a film adapted from part of the novel of the same name by Jin Yong, a master of martial arts literature in the Chinese-speaking world. The movie depicts the fierce power struggles among martial artists, entangled in the turmoil of war. This film marks director Tsui Hark’s return to the wuxia (martial arts) genre, having established himself as a master of martial arts cinema with works such as “Once Upon a Time in China” and the “Detective Dee” series.
With a top-tier cast that includes Xiao Zhan, Zhuang Dafei, and Tony Leung Ka-fai, and as the first martial arts film ever to be released on Lunar New Year’s Day, “Legends of the Condor Heroes: The Gallants” has drawn early and intense attention from local audiences. “Legends of the Condor Heroes: The Gallants” was also selected as the “Most Anticipated Lunar New Year Release” at the 2024 Weibo Movie Night held last year.
The anticipation surrounding “Legends of the Condor Heroes: The Gallants” is bringing new energy to the Chinese box office as well. This year’s advance ticket sales for Lunar New Year films in China surpassed CNY 100 million in just 5 hours and 27 minutes after opening, setting a new record for the fastest time in Chinese history. “Legends of the Condor Heroes: The Gallants” recorded advance ticket sales of CNY 48.17 million, overwhelmingly taking the number one spot among all films.
With this project, Dexter has once again demonstrated its strong partnership with director Tsui Hark, marking their fifth collaboration following “Detective Dee: The Mystery of the Phantom Flame,” “The Taking of Tiger Mountain,” “Sword Master,” and “Journey to the West: The Demons Strike Back.”
With recent discussions to expand cultural exchange between Korea and China, such as the Korea-China Culture and Tourism Ministers’ Meeting, gaining momentum, it is expected that Dexter will resume participation in a variety of projects in the Chinese market, leveraging its extensive experience and proven technological expertise.
Meanwhile, the company stated that it is currently reviewing and pursuing overseas projects with multiple production companies in China, Japan, and other countries, and is steadily expanding the scope of its production involvement.
