Kang Full’s original webtoon series “Moving,” which amassed 200 million views over the years, has returned with great fanfare on one of the world’s leading OTT platforms.
Dexter Studios (206560), a company specializing in VFX and content production, announced on August 10 that it participated in the video and sound production for Disney’s original series “Moving.” Dexter Studios took care of the VFX (visual effects) and worked as a DI&DIT (digital color correction and digital imaging technician), while its subsidiary Livetone produced the sound effects used throughout the series.
“Moving,” co-produced by Studio & New and Mr. Romance, is a “human action” series that tells the story of children – living in the present – hiding their superpowers and their parents – living in the past – hiding painful secrets. Directors Park In-je and Park Yoon-seo, who worked together on “Kingdom Season 2,” another highly successful OTT series as well as the movie “The Mayor,” co-directed the series. The author of the original webtoon series, Kang Full, wrote the script, adding more buzz surrounding the series.
Actor Ryu Seung-ryong plays the role of Jang Joo-won, who has an infinite regenerative ability to quickly recover from any wound, Han Hyo-joo plays Lee Mi-hyeon, a woman with supernatural senses, Zo In-sung plays Kim Doo-sik, who has the ability to fly, Cha Tae-hyun plays Jeon Gye-do, a person with electrical abilities, and Frank, a mysterious person who appears to be hunting down people with superpowers, is played by Ryoo Seung-bum. The star-studded cast is another reason fans are waiting for “Moving” to hit the airwaves.
Livetone sound supervisor Kang Hye-yeong, who oversaw the sound production, said, “There’s this tense, exciting storyline behind ’Moving.’ It has people flying in the air, a lot of shooting and hand-to-hand combat. It’s full of action sequences. Each of the 20 episodes has its own plot, so we tried to add something new to each incident or situation depicted in the episodes.”
Kang continued, “In scenes where these superhuman characters would fight each other with electricity, we tried to add some thrilling high-frequency sounds to match what people see with what they hear. We also added sound to add more depth to the scenes where people would lift off and fly through the air. We just wanted to create something different.”
Dexter Studios’ colorist Kim Il-gwang, who worked on the digital intermediate process, also explained how the technology was set up. According to Kim, “The whole series took characters to different countries, including Korea, China, and Russia. So, we had to work the image and tone to show an accurate representation of the cultural characteristics of each location.” He added, “There were many scenes where the director would flashback from the present to the past, which is why we had to focus on the details that captured the atmosphere and ambiance of each time period.”
Kim said, “For scenes from the past, we toned the colors used throughout the video down to create a dark and fearful atmosphere. In some scenes, when the main characters would appear, we color graded the entire screen blue so that the store signs and neon signs would glow softly to create depth to the scene.”
Meanwhile, Livetone, a subsidiary of Dexter Studios, took over the sound department for “Moving,” marking its first-ever project with Disney+. Livetone CEO Choi Tae-young said, “I’m so happy to have added a new reference to our portfolio after working on such a major project invested by a global giant in the content business.” He added, “I hope that ‘Moving’ can inspire more interesting productions that use completely different and unique soundscapes going forward.”
Previously, global consulting firm Boston Consulting Group (BCG) reported that the global OTT market had grown from USD 76 billion (KRW 100.1072 trillion) in 2018 to USD 110 billion (KRW 14.487 billion) in 2020, and is expected to reach USD 141 billion (KRW 185 trillion) in 2022.
Recently, Deloitte Korea Group also published a report titled “Media and Entertainment Market Growth Drivers and Requirements for Securing Competitive Advantage,” forecasting that the global M&E market will grow by 9.5% annually from USD 2.5 trillion in 2022 to USD 6 trillion in 2032. The report stressed the need to pay attention to the direction of OTT platforms and how they are expanding their business, citing competition to secure high-value adding content, use of social media (SNS), and fandom as drivers for market growth. * Exchange rate before noon on August 10, 2023, in Korea
