“Black Knight,” the latest sensation on Netflix released just last week, is getting some serious traction. Just five days in, the series is now up to first place in Netflix’s global top 10 TV non-English category with 31.22 million total viewing hours. “Black Knight’s” success is great news for Dexter Studios, which played an important role – albeit indirectly – in the series.
Dexter Studios (206560), a company specializing in VFX and content production, announced on May 17 that its subsidiary Livetone worked on the sound effects of “Black Knight.” The series joins some of Livetone’s other recent hits, including the recently released Netflix movie “Kill Boksoon” and Hankook Tire’s commercial for its new iON product – Livetone produced the sound effects for both projects as well.
“Black Knight” (directed by Cho Ui-seok, produced by Project 318) is a post-apocalyptic action drama set in 2071, where people cannot live without oxygen respirators due to extreme air pollution. “5-8,” a delivery driver and a brilliant fighter, meets refugee “Sa-wol” and confronts the “Cheonmyeong Group” that dominates the fallen world.
Livetone CEO Choi Tae-young, who oversaw the series’ sound production, said, “All scenes include sounds made by the delivery driver’s supplies and electronic devices, the buildings inside Cheonmyeong Group and the air circulation system they control, all the guns, and explosions you see during car chases and battles with terrorists trying to steal supplies. Given the overall tone and manner of the project, we designed sounds that helped accentuate the dark, cold, and dangerous atmosphere of the series.”
Choi explained, “Starting with the Netflix series Kingdom in 2019, Livetone has worked on a number of projects commissioned by Netflix, including ‘Space Sweepers,’ ‘Squid Game,’ ‘The Silent Sea,’ ‘Love and Leashes,’ ‘Juvenile Justice,’ ‘Carter,’ ‘A Model Family,’ ‘Seoul Vibe,’ and ‘Black Knight.’ Livetone’s work has helped it grow its presence around the world thanks to worldwide OTT platforms, which enable consumers to stream content from a variety of genres. All of us at Livetone will continue to provide even better sound effects to the public across all platforms, including TV, cinemas, OTT, and new media.”
Meanwhile, Livetone is a subsidiary and core affiliate of Dexter Studios – Dexter Studios owns more than 90% of Livetone’s shares. Previously, the company worked on “Parasite,” which took the Academy Awards by storm, and made a huge name for itself winning the non-English sound editing technology award at the MPSE Golden Reel Awards hosted by the Motion Picture Sound Editors (MPSE). More recently, Livetone has been working closely with its parent company to generate more synergy. It joined various projects, including a TV commercial commissioned by Hankook Tire and an immersive content project led by the ASEAN Culture House.
