Visual effects (VFX) and content company Dexter Studios flexed its muscles as Asia’s top VFX company at the world’s largest computer graphics conference this year.
The company announced on December 9 that it shared the latest industry trends and technology applications on the subject of visual effects and virtual production at Siggraph Asia. Siggraph Asia, which got under way on December 6, ends on December 9 (a 4-day event).
It is the largest conference in the VFX industry, typically attended by more than 8,000 experts in computer graphics and interactive techniques from around the world, and features various community activities such as presentations on technical papers, exhibitions, and visual demonstrations. This year, Dexter Studios, a VFX company, hosted talk sessions and gave presentations on a couple of different subjects.
On December 7, the company hosted a talk session with AMD, a company specializing in computer system semiconductors. Supervisors Kim Seon-goo and Kim Tae-seop gave a presentation on the construction of Visual Productions (VPs) and shared VFX artwork done by Dexter Studios, respectively. Meanwhile, Dexter Studios has also advanced into the virtual production (VP) business, a next-generation technology that combines VFX, and at the talk session, it showcased how it built and operates the company’s LED WALL Studio “D1.” So far, the D1 Studio has been used in a number of projects, including an upcoming movie, The Moon, and commercials for Korean companies. Going forward, Dexter Studios plans on using the D1 studio system to produce its own IP content as well.
On December 8, Supervisor Jegal Seung shared case studies on Dexter Studios’ work titled “The way we go, Dexter,” and talked about Korea’s VFX industry as the main speaker. Included in his presentation were detailed visuals of different concepts such as the symbolic meaning of the cube in the movie Alienoid Part 1, the spaceship used to show an alien world, and the alien organisms. Moreover, Jegal also outlined changes across the industry stemming from the recent expansion of the OTT market and the diversity of content with technologies such as VR and AR.
A company official said, “Dexter Studios is making its presence known across the industry by adapting quickly to new trends in visual effects technology, which has evolved from 1st generation CG, 2nd generation VFX, and 3rd generation VP.” He added, “With the recent increase in content that requires VFX technology, such as movies, dramas, games, and VR, our company is expecting some major growth as a business going forward as well.”
Meanwhile, Dexter Studios continues to participate in computer graphics conferences around the world to interact with various industry officials. At Siggraph 2017, it gave a presentation on its in-house software ZENN – a company official used the program to create and explain the background composition of digital creatures and environmental elements. In 2019, Dexter Studios also gave a presentation in the Technical Briefs session on the subject of immersion-enhancing technology developed while executing a theme park project in China.
