Visual effects (VFX) and content company Dexter Studios (CEO: Kim Wook, Kang Jong-ik) welcomed the new year with some virtual characters.

Dexter Studios hosted the “Dexter’s Cells” event on January 3 to officially open the company for business in 2022. In an announcement on January 4, the company said it used VR technology and content from “Yumi’s Cells,” a social VR-toon developed and created based on a webtoon of the same title.

To prevent the spread of COVID-19, Dexter Studios invited more than 400 guests, including employees at the company’s affiliates, to this “untact” event. Invited guests were given a chance to become characters from Yumi’s Cells VR, and take part in various games, such as OX quizzes. Long-term service awards were also handed out during this event.

Dexter Studios used the opportunity to announce its business plans for 2022 as well. This year, Dexter Studios is looking to diversify its VFX business, and establish a stable supply chain based on a partnership with global OTT. Moreover, it plans to acquire various original IPs to take another step forward as a film and TV production company, and to boost its profit margin through its advertising business with Krema Worldwide, a subsidiary of Dexter Studios.

In addition, the company’s virtual production studio “D1,” launched in November, has plans to develop a specialized stage solution that can separate D1 from its competitors, and also build a new studio with an investment worth KRW 20 billion. In 2022, Dexter Studios is expected to expand its business portfolio by upgrading its digital human production capabilities, hologram technology, and NFT technology, while driving the metaverse industry forward.

Dexter Studios’ CEOs Kim Wook and Kang Jong-ik said, “Dexter Studios’ acquisition of Krema Worldwide, long-term partnerships with overseas global OTT companies, and success at the box office with ‘Escape from Mogadishu’ were all remarkable achievements in 2021 despite the difficulties presented by COVID-19. All the credit goes to our staff. We hope that we can all feel proud to be a part of the Dexter family in 2022, and take another leap forward together.”

Meanwhile, Dexter Studios, which was founded in 2012, is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. It is an all-in-one comprehensive content company that plans and produces content. It also specializes in post-production using its one-stop system. To date, it has produced “Mr. Go,” “Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds,” “Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days,” “Ashfall,” and “Escape from Mogadishu.”

In addition to movies, Dexter Studios produces and develops immersive virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and extended reality (XR) content. Most notable productions include “White Rabbit,” “Help Me,” “From the Earth,” “The Tide,” “Along with the Gods VR – Escaping Hell,” “Along with the Gods VR – Piece of Memory” (VR content), as well as LGU+ 5G AR content, SKT 5G AR content, and the Daejeon Sodaeheon immersive cultural heritage content (commissioned by the Cultural Heritage Administration). Last month, Dexter Studios launched a new thriller VR-toon, “The Choice VR,” via the global online game platform Steam. “Yumi’s Cells VR,” which was unveiled at the company’s new year’s meeting for 2022, is scheduled for release during the first half of 2022.
