Dexter Studios Participates in VFX and DI Technology for Director Sang-ho Yeon’s Film ‘Paradise Lost’: “Continuing Cross-Genre and Cross-Platform Collaboration”
Dexter Studios is continuing its cross-genre collaboration as a key technical partner bringing Director Sang-ho Yeon’s ‘Yeoniverse’ worldview to life.
Comprehensive content studio Dexter Studios (206560, hereinafter “Dexter”) announced that it participated in the visual effects (VFX) and digital intermediate (DI) sectors for Director Sang-ho Yeon’s new film ‘Paradise Lost’.
‘Paradise Lost’ is a psychological thriller that begins when Ryu So-young (played by Hyun-joo Kim), a mother who lost her son in a camping school bus disappearance 9 years ago, is miraculously reunited with her son Ryu Seon-woo (played by Bae Hyun-sung), whom she believed to be dead. The film has been officially invited to the Special Presentations section of the 51st Toronto International Film Festival and the 46th Hawaii International Film Festival, while securing pre-sales in 118 countries worldwide, heightening anticipation both domestically and abroad.
‘Paradise Lost’ follows in the footsteps of Director Sang-ho Yeon’s acclaimed low-budget film project ‘The Face’ from last year. Dexter participated in the VFX and DI work for both projects, joining in the expansion of Director Sang-ho Yeon’s cinematic universe.
Dexter has maintained a close collaborative relationship with Director Sang-ho Yeon across numerous works, participating in VFX, DI, and sound sectors. Starting with the film Train to Busan, Dexter has contributed technical expertise to titles such as Psychokinesis, Peninsula, the Netflix series Hellbound, JUNG_E, Parasyte: The Grey, The Revelations, The Face, and Colony, elevating the quality of theatrical films and OTT contents across diverse genres including sci-fi, creature features, action, thriller, and mystery.
Reflecting the unique characteristics of the project, the Dexter VFX Department finely adjusted the scope of visual effects and expression methods to effectively convey the core of each scene.
Jeong-ho Hong, the VFX Supervisor from Dexter who handled the project, stated, “We focused on expressing the visual differences between reality and the world within the AI program, as well as naturally bringing the characteristics of the virtual space to life. Through repeated collaborations with Director Sang-ho Yeon, who possesses an exceptional eye for VFX, our shared understanding and aligned visual direction allowed us to proceed smoothly despite a limited budget.”
The Dexter DI Department focused on creating a uniquely unsettling and unfamiliar atmosphere using the contrast of cold hues and vivid colors.
Kyung-jong Lee, the colorist from the Dexter DI Department who led the digital color grading, remarked, “In thrillers, colors are often stripped away to build tension through darkness. However, in ‘Paradise Lost’, we brought out a strange sense of unease created by adding high-saturation colors on top of cool tones. We adjusted the contrast and lighting so that character expressions and fine screen details remain vivid even in dark scenes, heightening the psychological tension.”
Meanwhile, Dexter continues to strengthen its unrivaled capabilities across theatres, OTT platforms, films, dramas, and animation by collaborating with domestic and international production companies throughout the entire post-production pipeline—including VFX, DI, sound design and mixing, and virtual production.
